To: To Baron Ignaz von Gleichenstein
Vienna, April, 1809

Anderson v1 pg227-228 - letter #213

My rooms are in the Walfischgasse No. 1087, on the second floor.
               (It’s a b[rothe]l, you will know it)

Is it really true?  Are you here? –
Detestable, false, faithless, treacherous, thoughtless friend!

And yet a friend? – Had I followed the dictates of my heart, I would have hurried off to you in spite of all the resentment and anger seething within me against you – but no – one must learn to control oneself – for you heartless folk only laugh at us – you have not even shown any respect for the composer, for you have not acknowledged my dedication – I expect to see you tomorrow morning before the austere judgment-seat of friendship even though you may be a baron or a secret envoy or Heaven knows what – I am plainly neither more nor less than your exceedingly angry friend
